What is Adjective ?
A word which is used to describe a noun or a pronoun and which tells more about the kind , quantity , ownership of the noun or pronoun they describe are known as Adjectives .
By the word , Adjective means added to , therefore it is also defined as – “A word which adds meaning to the noun or pronoun is called Adjective “.
Kinds of Adjectives :
As Adjectives tells about the kind , quantity, ownership of the noun or pronoun they describe , on the basis of these Adjectives can be of six kinds .
1) Adjective of Quality :
A word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun and that indicates the quality of them are called as Adjective of Quality.
The Adjectives of quality deals with the quality i.e., kind with respect to the noun or pronoun they describe.
Therefore the Adjectives of quality indicates the size , shape , colour of a noun or a pronoun.
Examples of Adjectives of Quality :
(a) Shreya is Intelligent girl.
(b) Mahatma Gandhi was the great leader .
Here , words Intelligent and Great are the examples of Adjectives of quality.
Adjectives of Quantity :
A word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun and indicates the quantity of them in terms of measuring words and are called Adjectives of Quantity.
They indicate the quantity of noun or pronoun they describe and answers the question how much .
The Adjectives of Quantity are used with uncountable nouns.
Examples of Adjectives of Quantity :
(a) Reena wants some sugar for making the Tea.
(b)Mohit has enough money to visit Pune.
Here , some and enough are examples of Adjectives of Quantity.
3) Adjectives of number :
A word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun and tells us how many people or things are being talked about is called Adjective of number.
They indicate the number of a noun or pronoun they describe therefore known as Adjectives of number .
They are used with countable nouns .
Examples of Adjectives of number :
(a) Two students were chosen for the assistant role in the play of queen victoria.
(b) Rajan secured fifth position in State merit.
Here , cardinal number two and ordinal number fifth are the examples of Adjectives of number.
Exceptions
Some adjectives like some , sufficient , few can be used for both countable and uncountable nouns.
Example :
(a) Some food has kept in the cold storage.
(b) Some Students reached early at picnic spot.
In example (a) , some I’d is used with an uncountable noun.
In example ( b) , some is used with a countable noun.
(4) Demonstrative Adjective :
A word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun and point out which person or thing is meant , is called Demonstrative Adjective.
Demonstrative Adjectives answers the question which one and helps in pointing out the noun or pronoun they meant .
Examples of Demonstrative Adjectives :
(a) These students promoted in the next class.
(b) Those criminals must be punished.
Here , these and those are the examples of Demonstrative Adjectives.
(5) Interrogative Adjectives :
A word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun and are used along with them to ask questions, is called Interrogative Adjective.
They are generally of interrogative form like Which , What and Whose.
Examples of Interrogative Adjectives :
(a) Which painting have you bought ?
(b) Whose bag is this?
Here , which and whose are examples of interrogative adjectives.
(6) Possessive Adjective :
A word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun and shows possession or belonging is called Possessive Adjective.
Examples of Possessive Adjective :
(a) My Friend lives in Chennai.
(b) Sumit lives with his brother .
Here , my and his are examples of Possessive Adjectives.
