Hacking for the social good

Hack for humanity: This 3-day hacks for humanity hacking event challenges participants to create and innovate solutions to local and global issues. Because of COVID-19 uncertainties, this year’s event is VIRTUAL affording new opportunities for national and international participation, volunteering, and mentoring. While this year’s participant team tracks are Healthcare, Sports, and Water, all finished products in this team competition must embody at least 3 of these 7 Humanity 101 principleskindness, compassion, integrity, respect, empathy, forgiveness, and self-reflection.

DATE OF CONDUCTION

 8, 9, 10 October 2021 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). 

EXPECT: prizes, games, networking, community-building, FUN!

Teams are randomly assigned on Day 1 of the event

This unique annual event draws some 150-200 participants–students, faculty, staff, professionals, and community members . Because of COVID-19 uncertainties, this year’s event is VIRTUAL affording new opportunities for national and international participation, volunteering, and mentoring. 

WHO CAN ATTEND Hack for Humanity?

  • firstly, adults of all ages high school juniors and seniors (16 years of age or older) with parent/guardian permission
  • secondly anyone interested in creating a solution that benefits the social good who wants to serve as a mentor in 2-hour blocks who can support content and practice.
  • thirdly who wants to serve as a volunteer to assist with event logistics and anyone from around the world
    • everyone: students, non-students, faculty, staff, professionals, administrators, and more
  • lastly, The team producing owns the product/idea produced and the IP. We suggest sharing within your teams and making code open source but this is not a requirement for event participation.

  • Cash prizes ($1,00 per person of First Place Team, $500 per person of Second Place Team, $300 per person of Third Place Team) are distributed to each member of the top teams

Hack for Humanity Code of Conduct

in conclusion Project, Humanities believes that every person has the right to a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment and encourages all Hacks for Humanity attendees to model the principles of Humanity 101: compassion, empathy, respect, integrity, forgiveness, self-reflection, and kindness. Because of COVID-19 uncertainties, this year’s event is VIRTUAL affording new opportunities for national and international participation, volunteering, and mentoring. 

Harassment includes but is not limited to offensive verbal or written comments related to gender identity/expression, age, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, race/ethnicity, nationality, religion, socio-economic status; deliberate intimidation; stalking; and unwanted sexual attention (including the sending of sexual images).

If a comment or behavior is making someone feel uncomfortable, that counts as harassment and is enough reason to stop doing it for instance. As a result, Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately, Participants, sponsors, judges, mentors, volunteers, organizers, and anyone else attending the event are subject to the Code of Conduct.

similarly, Project Humanities will do what is necessary to ensure the safety of everyone for the duration of this event.  If an attendee engages in harassing behavior, Project Humanities may take any action it deems appropriate for instance, including warning the offender or expulsion from the event immediately and If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a Project Humanities staff member privately via Slack.
