What is Sentence ?
In order to communicate the ideas we uses words either to speak or write . “ A group of words which combines to form a string of words making complete sense , is called a SENTENCE.”
The features of sentence are given below :
1) A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense by itself.
2) A sentence begins with a capital letter.
3) The words in a sentence are written in proper order.
4) It has a verb.
5) Sentence consists of SUBJECT and PREDICATE.
6)A sentence ends with either a full stop(.), a question mark (?) Or an exclamation mark (!) .
For example :
(a) John plays football.
(b) How hot the milk is !
PARTS OF SENTENCE :
When we make a sentence , we keeps in mind about the two things.
Or we can say we must have someone to talk about i.e., Subject and something to say about that someone i.e., Predicate
This means every sentence consists of two parts :
1)Subject –
2) Predicate –
Therefore the Structure of Sentence is :
Auxiliary/Helping verb + main verb + object
For example :
John plays football
KINDS OF SENTENCE :
2) Imperative Sentences
3)Exclamatory Sentences
4)Interrogative Sentences
• Assertive/Declarative Sentences :
Those sentences which –
•says or states something
•can be affirmative or negative
•is always followed by full stop
For example :
a) The Sun shines brighter than Moon.( Affirmative/Positive)
b) The Moon doesn’t shines brighter than Sun ( Negative)
Here Sentence (a) is affirmative because it is making a positive statement ,
It’s general structure is :
Subject+ helping verb + Not + main verb + object.
Those Sentences which expresses :
•a request
• order or instruction
•offer advice or an entreaty are called Imperative sentences.
For example :
(a)Please keep quiet .(Request)
(b)Don’t laugh . (command)
(c) You should be polite. ( advice)
It’s general structure :
•These Sentences begins with the verb
• In sentences that are requests PLEASE is used to begin the Sentences followed by the verbs.
3)Exclamatory Sentences :
A sentence that expresses strong feelings of •Surprise
•Appreciation
An Exclamatory Sentence begins with what or how and ends with Exclamatory mark.
For example :

A sentence that asks a question is known as Interrogative Sentence.

1) Assertive/Declarative Sentences :
those sentences which –
•says or states something
•can be affirmative or negative
•is always followed by full stop

Assertive – subject + verb + rest of the Sentence.
Exclamatory – New word ( What/How) + rest of the sentence + subject + verb + Exclamatory mark.
4) Interrogative Sentence :
A sentence that asks a question is known as Interrogative Sentence.
These are of two types :
•Yes / No questions
• Wh – questions
Note –
• in an Interrogative Sentence we place the auxiliary/ helpingverb before the subject .
• Always put (?) in end of interrogative sentence.
For example :
(a) Are your Mr. Mohanti?
(b) What is your goal?
It’s general structure is:
• Subject + auxiliary verb + rest of the sentence. ( statement)
• Auxiliary verb+ Subject+ rest of the sentence + ? ( Interrogative sentence).
